The Lantern Festival, also knowns as Yuanxiao Festival or Shangyuan Festival, is on the fifteenth day of the first month in lunar calendar. It also marks the end of Chinese New Year celebrations.

Celebrations vary in different regions in China. Generally, family will enjoy a reunion dinner, then go to temples to join in the celebration. Riddle solving is one of the many popular activities of the day. The riddles are written on the lanterns, sweets are usually rewards for correct answers. Children also carry lanterns though the evening. In some regions people write wishes on the paper lanterns and set them up to the sky for good luck and wish making.

A typical food for this festival is Tangyuan. These are balls made with glutinous rice flour with sweet filling, for example sweet crunchy peanut paste, boiled in sugar water and is usually served hot.
