Moon Jar is one of my favourite shapes to make. They are usually quite round (as the moon) and with a short foot and neck. It is also a very popular shape to practice throwing with, as it’s quite hard to get right!
While I love using colours on most of my pots, I actually have a secret love for black and white. This perhaps come from my love of manga (graphic novels that are usually back and white).
These moon jars were made using a rough black stoneware clay. I then either smooth the texture, or enhance the roughness, then blob some recycled porcelain clay and slip onto them. It’s quite satisfying making a mess sometime!
This black clay however does not like glazes at all; so they were high fired unglazed, make them only as decorative vases and do not hold water.
